RahabSermon for Sunday June 21, 2009

“In Over Your Head”

When we make a step of faith, God places us in situations that bigger than our human capacity. In these moments, we can feel overwhelmed, fearful, and question our decision. Rahab was certainly in over her head, but God gave her what she needed to complete her assignment.

So I’m laughing right now at the title of the sermon for Sunday, and realizing this is the reason for yet another short blog entry.  Three letters: VBS!  This is one of my favorite weeks of the year, yet definitely an overwhelming one.  The really cool thing is that our VBS theme is on Faith, and not being afraid because God is with us….sound familiar?  It should as this is pretty much the theme for our series on Rahab.  Our kids will be singing at the opening of services to kick us off, and introduce the theme for the day.  The rest of our music deals a lot with the subject of faith, and trusting God to take care of us even when we don’t understand how or why.

This week will also be a little sad for us here at Oasis as we say goodbye to a family that has been with us since the beginning.  John and Christina Anderson; as you probably already know, are moving to Omaha for John’s job.  The Andersons have been a big part of the Oasis family, and where the first members of the Oasis Worship Team when we began in 2002.  We really appreciate their years of service, and wish them well in this new chapter of life.  This will be their final service with us on Sunday, so be sure to take time to encourage them as they make this big move.

Thanks for taking time to check out what will be happening on Sunday morning.  Be sure to check out the songs by clicking the links in the chart above.  I look forward to worshiping with you all on Sunday.

“Moving Beyond Yourself”

When God is moving us in a particular direction, our tendency is to ask, “how will this effect me?”  Selfishness often keeps us from being obedient to God.  We must get over ourselves, if we are going to follow God.  Today, we will see how Rahab risked it all to help others and to be obedient to God.

What a great start to our series about Rahab on Sunday!  I’m really looking forward to the next 3 weeks of the series.  Due to VBS, Camps, etc… Our blogs will probably be a shorter than normal, so please bear with me for the next few weeks.  I am very excited about Sunday as we go Acoustic/Djembe` this week.  Be sure to check out the music in the chart above so you can be better prepared for Sunday.  “Hosanna” is another new song to Oasis, so spend a little extra time on that one.  Also Sunday night we kick off VBS Crocodile Dock!  We’ll be “Rockin” this dock, so stop on by to see some awesome times of worship.  I’ll look forward to worshiping with you Sunday.

“Getting Past the Past”

Rahab was a prostitute. She had a past that was not pretty, but when she put her faith in God the past was forgotten, and God plotted a course for her future. Rahab was able to break free from a life that was holding her down.  Today, we will look at how faith can move us forward toward God’s plan for our future.

I’m a little late with the blog this week due to getting caught up from being on vacation last week.  So I’ll be brief.  I am really excited about this new series as we begin looking at the life of Rahab.  Faith is something we all need more of, and it is evident that Rahab is a person of faith that we can learn from.  This week our music celebrates God for who He is, and for what He has done for us.  Take time to listen the music by clicking the links in the chart above.  I look forward to worshipping with you on Sunday

What a great day we had together Sunday.  I thought the kids did an excellent job for their surprise appearance during the music portion of the service Sunday.  This week Josh Pickard will be leading us in worship.  Josh is a very talented musician, and has really been seeking God as he planned this service.  Being on stage here at Oasis can be a little stressful as you have a couple hundred people pretty much right on top of you….especially when it’s your first time leading out on an entire service.  Be in prayer for Josh, and help support him this week by lifting your voices as we sing together for our King.  I look forward to worshipping with you Sunday (This time from the congregation)  See you then.

This week’s music deals a lot with our praises to God (of course) and our commitment, and longing to follow Him.  We open with “Song of Praise” which testifies of God’s goodness toward us all.  It’s our goal to give a sacrifice of praise this week as we come before the one who has given us so much.

“I Will Boast” has quickly become one of my favorites.  We sang it for the first time a couple of weeks ago.  It is a simple declaration that everything we have comes from our God.  We cannot boast about ourselves, but only in the one who made us.

At this point in the service we focus more on our commitment to God, and asking Him to revive us, and make us more like Him.  “Revive Us Again”  begins this thought, and then we will transition into “Take My Life And Let It Be”.  If we truly want to be revived, then we have to surrender ourselves to God.  We will only be singing the first verse of this song which is the overall statement of the song.  “Take my life and let it be consecrated Lord to Thee; Take my moments and my days Let them flow in ceaseless praise, let them flow in ceaseless praise”  If you have time, check out the rest of the lyrics to this song online.  It is a great song of commitment.

We will finish the music portion of the service with the song “Speak To My Heart”.  We have taken time during the music to ask God to Revive us, and take our lives and make them more pleasing to Him.  We finish up with a song asking God to speak to us, and we will obey.  Can you truly sing these songs this week from your heart?  Take time to check them out by clicking the links provided in the chart above.

Thanks as always for checking out what we will be doing this Sunday.  I really look forward to worshipping with you all!

It was a very cool day for me having my brother Derick in services yesterday.  Thanks for all your words of encouragement to him….just note that if he told you any stories about me, they probably aren’t true (unless they where about me being the greatest brother ever of course J

Our message this week is about following through with our commitments.  Our music this week also deals a little with this topic.  With that being said, our opening song actually doesn’t go along with the theme at all, and is simply a song of worship to get us going Sunday.

OK, now we get into our theme for the day.  “Blessed Be Your Name” I think is applicable to this theme in that it talks about worshipping God no matter what is going on around us.  Blessed be Your name when times are good, and when times are bad.  No matter what we face, our God is still worthy of praise.  Just like all of our commitments, the true test of our faithfulness is when things aren’t going as good as we would like.

“Marvelous Light” continues our theme by talking about moving forward out of darkness and shame.  We celebrate that sin has lost it’s power because of what Christ did for us.  I’ve heard Bro. Todd talk about this before, “if you’re not moving forward in your Christian walk, more than likely you’re sliding backward”.  Let’s strive this week to run towards the Marvelous Light that Christ offers.

We finish up the music portion of the service with the song of commitment “I Surrender All”.  I love this song for an invitation, but it’s just as appropriate earlier in the service.  If you can truly say “I Surrender All”, it seems to me that statement is unconditional.  Can you make this statement even before the message as your commitment to follow whatever it is God tells you to do in that service?

Our closing song for the day is “Victory in Jesus” as we celebrate what Christ has done for us, as well as what Christ is doing in the lives of others.   Causing us to celebrate even more will be the addition of a lot of new members whom you will meet by video, and several who are following their commitment through baptism.

What an awesome day we have in store!  I know I’ll be looking out for that huge bear hug from Gene after services for singing “Victory In Jesus”.  I’m always a little afraid to do this song in that one of these days he’s going to get so excited he might jump from the back row to the stage…just watch your heads and enjoy it with him.  I look forward to worshipping with you all on Sunday.

This has been a great series so far, and I expect it to get even better as we go.  Sometimes our music goes directly with what the sermon is about.  This week proved to be a little difficult to follow that trend.  I don’t really know how to always explain what I do, but often it seems God places songs in my head, and will not let me get away from them.  This week there are several of those songs.  Without trying to sound too “churchy”, it seems these are the songs God wants to hear us sing this week.   So let’s do it with all of our heart!

We will begin with the traditional version of “Jesus Saves” followed by a brand new song by the same title.  So brand new in fact that I can’t even get my hands on the CD for some reason.  You can listen to it on youtube though by clicking the link in the chart above.

“Come Magnify The Lord” has hopefully become a little more familiar through the past couple of months.  I hope this doesn’t sound conceited, but I really like this song.  I love the way we can shout out the chorus as we proclaim some things about our awesome God.   “You’re Worthy of My Praise” continues the theme of worship as we proclaim that He alone is worthy of our praise.

We will finish up with the song “Shine” which I think does fit loosely with our theme in the fact that we are singing collectively.  “WE will shine like stars in the universe……Jesus WE’LL be living for Your glory”.  To proclaim as a group of people that we will live for God’s glory is an awesome thing.

Our closing song on Sunday will be “Children of God” which is by my all time favorite Christian artist Steven Curtis Chapman.  I love being reminded that I am a child of God.  He calls me a son, and he loves to hear His children sing His praises.  Let’s rock it out as we leave the service on Sunday.

Thanks as always for checking out the blog, and preparing yourself for our time of worship together on Sunday.  This week will be even more special for me as my brother will be here, and playing a part in the service.  I really look forward to worshipping with you Sunday.

You’ve probably heard me talk about this before, but I think it’s worth repeating.  So often we want to be like someone else.  We want to have talents and abilities that another person has.  We want to look like him, or look like her.  I know it’s something I have struggled with often.  I’m thankful that God opened my eyes to the fact that He didn’t create me to be like anyone else….he created me to be Doug.  He created you to be you!  Today’s service deals a lot with this as Bro. Todd will be talking about “Your Signature”.  God placed you on this earth for a purpose….and that purpose is not to be like everyone else, but to be who God has created YOU to be.

Our music this week deals with this theme.  We open up with “Wonderful Maker” which celebrates our awesome creator.  He created us in His image, and with the talents and abilities that He wanted us to have.  From there, we celebrate the fact that the creator of the universe calls us friend.  “Friend Of God” is one of those songs that just makes me smile.  I love the first line “who am I that you are mindful of me, that you hear me when I call”  We go on to proclaim how amazing it is that God would call us friend.

We will be doing a new song to Oasis this week called “I Will Boast”.  My brother actually introduced me to this song (please don’t tell him this as I like to make him think that I know everything.  Ha!)  I really like the concept of this song as we are reminded that everything we “own” and every ability we have is not of us.  When we boast, we will boast in the Lord our God who alone is worthy.  Check out this new song by clicking the link in the chart above.  I think you’ll really enjoy it.

We will settle things down into an acoustic set towards the end of the music portion of the service with songs like “Just the Way I Am”, “How Great Thou Art”, and “How Great Is Our God”.

I’m really looking forward to this service, and believe it will be a special time of worship for us.  Thanks for taking time to check out what will be happening at Oasis on Sunday.  I look forward to worshiping with you then.
